Detailed Job Description

An internship with Superior Tube Products will provide you with opportunities to experience many aspects of manufacturing and machine operation as you work on projects to contribute to ensuring smooth and successful manufacturing operations. You will be part of the Production Team as an indispensable asset to a production-driven organization.

Machine Operator:  The strategic importance of a machine operator lies in their ability to prioritize safety, maintain product quality, ensure operational efficiency, adapt to changing demands, share knowledge, contribute to continuous improvement, and manage costs effectively.

Responsibilities for this internship include but are not limited to:

  • Follow Safety Protocols and guidelines.  
  • Perform basic preventative maintenance and other duties related. 
  • Make basic adjustments to machines and other duties related.  
  • Load program/perform basic edits.  
  • Fill out Production Control Board (PCB). 
  • Participate in Continuous Improvement Initiatives for safety, quality, and process improvements (2 Second Lean).  
  • Follow playbook and operator control plans. 
  • Perform quality checks.  
  • Troubleshoot/resolve equipment errors and malfunctions.  
  • Complete End of Shift responsibilities.  

Length of Training: Minimum 60 days to 120 days maximum

Week 1:

New hire orientation will be required in the first week which includes safety basics for being on the production floor and job specific safety, meeting team that they will be supporting Production Supervisor that will be responsible for training over the internship period. The new hire orientation will also include defining company culture, expectations, and policies that are necessary to be successful at Superior Tube Products.

Training Objective 1: Intern fully understands his/her role in the company and is familiar with what his/her responsibilities will be as well as expectations for performance. Intern will understand the safety expectations and importance of valuing safety and knowing when to stop an action for unsafe conditions or behaviors.

Week 2-6:

During this period, the intern will be paired with Superior Tube Products Advanced Bending Machine Operators to learn how to operate bending machines safely and efficiently. The training will consist of learning the following topics: Perform quality work within deadlines without direct supervision, interact professionally with other employees, customers, and suppliers, work effectively as a team contributor on all assignments, work independently while understanding the necessity for communicating and coordinating work efforts with other employees and organizations, delivering excellent customer service to both internal and external customers, and demonstrating the Core Values: Expertise, Service, and Passion. This will also include observing the Advanced Machine Operators performing their job duties and receiving feedback on performance and areas of opportunities.

The intern will also learn Lean Manufacturing practices through Lean Basics training provided by Training Facilitator. This will include 5S, Teamwork and Urgency, Waste, and Value vs Non-Value-Adding Tasks.

Training Objective 2: Intern will understand the process of knowing and following safety protocols and guidelines, perform basic preventative maintenance, make basic adjustments to machines, fill out Production Control Board, follow playbook and operator control plans, perform quality checks, troubleshoot/resolve equipment errors and malfunctions, and completing end of shift responsibilities on Bending machines.

 

Training Objective 3: Intern will understand the basics of lean manufacturing to include how to identify waste, value added or non-value-added tasks, how to suggest improvements, and find solutions.

Week 7-11:

During this period, the intern will be paired with Superior Tube Products Advanced Cutting Machine Operators to learn how to operate cutting machines safely and efficiently. The training will consist of learning the following topics: Perform quality work within deadlines without direct supervision, interact professionally with other employees, customers, and suppliers, work effectively as a team contributor on all assignments, work independently while understanding the necessity for communicating and coordinating work efforts with other employees and organizations, delivering excellent customer service to both internal and external customers, and demonstrating the Core Values: Expertise, Service, and Passion. This will also include observing the Advanced Machine Operators performing their job duties and receiving feedback on performance and areas of opportunities.

Training Objective 4: Intern will understand the process of knowing and following safety protocols and guidelines, perform basic preventative maintenance, make basic adjustments to machines, fill out Production Control Board, follow playbook and operator control plans, perform quality checks, troubleshoot/resolve equipment errors and malfunctions, and completing end of shift responsibilities on Cutting machines.

Week 12-16

During this period, the intern will be paired with an Advanced Machine Operator skilled in CNC and/or 5 Axis Laser Machine Operation for an introduction to our highest skill level machines. The training will consist of learning the basics of CNC and/or 5 axis laser machine set up and operation, operating machines safely and efficiently, as well as building upon their knowledge gained during their training on Level 1 and Level 2 Bending and Cutting machines.

Training Objective 5: The intern will learn basic functions of CNC and/or 5 Axis Laser Machine Operation following safety protocols and guidelines, perform basic preventative maintenance, make basic adjustments to machines, fill out Production Control Board, follow playbook and operator control plans, perform quality checks, troubleshoot/resolve equipment errors and malfunctions, and completing end of shift responsibilities on CNC/5 Axis Laser machines.

Week 17-18

During this time the intern will work with the Production Lead/Advanced Machine Operator Trainers to complete any training in process. Evaluation of performance of the intern and overall impact of the training accomplished. The intern will also meet with Human Resources on potential job offers or assisting them in a job search for companies in the area that would align with the knowledge that they have gained during this period.

Assessments Evaluation for Machine Operator Interns attached. This will be completed at the end of week 6, week 11, week 16, and week 18 to measure progress, accomplishments, goals, and areas that may need further training.  

Training Outcome:  Machine Operation certification for training completed on Level 1/Level 2/Level 3 machines. Forklift and Overhead Crane certification available if time allows and with permission of Production Supervisor.
